Most Frustrating Adventure Game Puzzle - Boxblue Studios - 11-06-2025

We've all been there... staring at the screen, clicking on every hotspot, talking to every character again... and again... and again...

So the question is, what is the most frustrating Adventure Game puzzle you have encountered?

The frustration can come from any source. Moon logic, over pixelated graphics, control methods, glitches, goats or anything whatsoever!

For me it was Future Wars.

In the days of playing my Atari ST on the family TV there was one section where you had to place a cork board pin into the cork board at the exact right spot to open a secret door... however there was virtually no visual clue as to where the pin should go.
Literal hours were spent by my brother and I scouring every square inch of the screen to find the correct location for this naffing pin... then we would be unceremoniously kicked off the TV so the News (or whatever) could go on and the adults had control of the cathode ray tube until the next morning...

Eventually by shining my grandad's torch over the screen (in a rotation pattern) we managed to find the single pixel that we needed to advance the game...

The celebrations are legendary in my family. (Well, my brother and I remember it at least).

So what's yours?

Deponia. Hands down. Requiring you to enter the option menu and fiddle with the audio settings as part of a puzzle is just asinine.

Very Meta Metal Gear Solid... and incredibly irksome. Still a great game though!

In the Anasazi section of Timelapse, I could not shoot that rabafratzen arrow through the hole in the stone tower! After more than 100 tries, I was about to shoot the shaman who repeatedly told me to "shoot straight as the wind blows." Fortunately for the shaman and my sanity, I found an easy cheat that I suspect was put in for those who had to test that section. Even the strategy guide, which described the action needed, said that the player would probably miss the target at first.

There was a cheat? I never got past that pesky arrow.

I don't even consider this a puzzle, but I want to mention a puzzle from an old Garfield fan adventure. There was a puzzle where you had to assemble a pipe system while the water was already coming. When ever you'd placed a piece, you were given another. It was a race against time.
After a while it switched from thick pipes to thin ones, because the first connection required a thick pipe, and the last connection required thin pipes.
The shape of the pipe pieces was randomized, and you just kept getting the thick parts until the game finally switched, usually so late that you didn't have enough room left to place them.
if you failed, you had to start over, but if you'd already reached the thin pipes, you just kept getting those, no thick ones.

I've never finished that game because I gave up eventually. It was just impossible for me.

The sliding puzzle in the church in Black Mirror 1.

Everything in Memento Mori 2, comparing puzzles like fingerprints—I didn't even manage to solve it with walkthrough.

When I think of absurdity Curse of Enchantia comes to mind. There is this ONE puzzle that an Inuit that is fishing always faints when you appear on screen, you have to ASSUME that you smell bad and that's why he faints. So get this : you have to WEAR deodorant one screen prior to the Inuit so that he does not faint. I actually solved this out of luck in my Amiga 500 without realizing why, but when I read the walkthrough in a magazine my brain melted. 1992, without internet and the creators are feeling sadistic or a bit looney (too many cartoons). Jesus... still liked the game though

“The Lost Crown” reminded me that I'm just as bad at music puzzles as I am at sliding puzzles.

Using the LASH system in Police Quest: SWAT. Just complete guesswork every time you make a command. And if even one word isn't exactly the same as the game wants, you die. And you hear bagpipes for a minute. And then you have to load it back up. Over. And over.

Yes, all you had to do was click backwards to the cave and turn around. I was so relieved when I found it.
