RE: Beneath A Steel Sky Appreciation Thread - Boxblue Studios - 12-05-2025

Well... now that you've asked...

Out of all the games that went towards forming my love of gaming, Beneath a Steel Sky is the one that I've had on almost every platform I've owned since the Atari ST Days.

As Joey himself might say, 'It's the mutts nuts!'

I truly loved/love/will always love that game.

A great dystopian story line intertwined by clever and relevant puzzles, great visuals (I mean, for the time they were INCREDIBLE), intelligent and witty dialogue, memorable characters and a comic by Dave Gibbons? How can this not be in everyone's top 5? Or even the Top 3?

You had the charm and wit of all the classic Point & Clicks as well as the more grown up story telling, including incidental character deaths that were not just for laughs. Visually stunning and addictively playable.

I loved this game. I bought it for my Atari ST and then when I upgraded to an Amiga I bought it again. I've had it on every system (pretty much) since then until eventually it found it's way into my Steam collection.

For me it was the zenith of late 80's, early 90's Adventure Games. I still remember the cover of the issue of C&VG that had a close up of the Gibbons art with the word bubble 'The best Adventure game ever. Geddit?' I had to buy it. The game... not just the magazine.

If they every release a 'Reforged version', I'm straight on the Kickstarter.

For me, I think this is THE pivotal adventure game. It was a transition from quirky 'use the fish on the cat' gaming to 'use the plastic explosive on the locker'.

And then a few years later... there was Broken Sword...

When I was playing the sequel I caught myself thinking that I would pay to play a remake of original BaSS that uses the same game engine/mechanics as the sequel.

I will give the sequel this: It looked amazing.
