RE: Community Playthrough: Blackwell Unbound (2007) - Hexenwerk - 12-01-2025

I want to play the game with commentary as well, but ... another time. After playing this, I played the first game, and now started the third as well, since I enjoyed it so much that I want to play the whole series now (and had it in my library anyway). Sooooo ...

what y'all wrote about the commentary sounds interesting and makes me curious. Looking forward to enjoy that as well, later.

For me it was interesting when playing the first game to see how different the "character switching" works to the second (and third) game.

And playing all the games now, it is nice to observe how the style of the graphics is developing.

The pixelated texts are hard to read now and then. These days I appreciate when there is a more "accessible" view of such written text for people with bad eyes (eh, we are getting old). But it still works for me, as it is.

I enjoyed the type of puzzles we had in this game. Makes me want to play more detective adventures (and I have a bunch of them on my pile, just haven't played them yet).

Around this time, we get to meet Harriet Sherman.

Of all the strange old ladies in this game, she's the coolest and most easy going. Harriet won't allow being swindled, but she has no problem with our little ruse - as long as she can keep the change. I think she likes the opportunity to gossip and maybe finally getting rid of that clue we really need. She doesn't want it and it's just lying around, collecting dust.

Turns out our lady ghost was as stubborn in life as in spectral form. In both cases, she couldn't move on. By now we've had several run-ins with another lady.

This woman isn't a ghost, but she seems to be doing a ghastly job.

This one creeped me out. But she also fascinated me, since I like "witch like" characters. Not having played the whole Blackwell series yet, i now know she plays some bigger role, but not exactly what or who she it. Looking forward to find out more while playing the other titles.

And I liked Harriet Sherman as well. Her apartment looks a bit sad ...

Same! The way she's introduced and communicates is unnerving - she's creepy, but she's also looking for some sort of connection. She seems unbalanced, but in
other ways, quite capable. Mostly of great harm.

Now that you mention it, she could probably use some help unpacking!

Is this guy playing the soundtrack? He's more concerned with music than talking to his fans. True dedication to his art - playing to us even after his demise.

One of my favourite interactions in the Blackwell series: Lauren and C. Sharp flirting in a red-draped piano bar.

The writing and the voice actors really make this work. Dave Gilbert's commentary made me laugh - did not expect that about the voice actor for the piano player, but the confidence level definitely checks out.

Joey's a little jealous - this is also adressed commentary. I'm curious if people picked up on Joey's feelings for Lauren. I think Dave Gilbert was clever giving Joey a set of comical snide remarks - you can read into them what you like, but the undertone is there.

I felt for Lauren - imagine carrying a ghost with you, whever you go. How do you get close to people? She's tired. She's seen a lot of loneliness tonight. This guy is a smooth talker, but he knows what he's doing. He doesn't just put the moves on her - it's more like a dance. And for a short while, she doesn't have to deal with death.

In the end, it's a way to get something we need, but the game doesn't shy away from showing Lauren expressing interest and desire. Something you don't often see from women in adventure games.

Not quite, but we're working on it.

I really like the light reggae syncopation on this track.

I liked the overall choice of locations as well. Really felt the mood in each one of them.

The writing, acting and music really came together. We get a small, off-beat tour of New York in each of the Blackwell games. I think that's really charming.

Somehow everything we do leads back to this fellow:

The late Joseph Mitchell was an actual writer for The New Yorker. His work is woven into the fabric of the Blackwell universe. Even in the first game, though you really need to be up on your Mitchell to recognize it. In this game, we get to meet the man and be a little rude to him.

He keeps his cards close to his chest, but he's quite helpful at the same time. Like every other character, he's lonely in a way - he has a  burden. A secret. Something he doesn't even quite understand himself. He's in luck: we're dishing out free therapy tonight.

The final scene is just around the corner.

RE: Community Playthrough: Blackwell Unbound (2007) - Hexenwerk - 12-06-2025

I only realized after finishing the game that Mitchell and other persons in the Blackwell series were based on real persons. I don't know if the developer comments about that during the game, since I had disabled the comments.

For me it is a very interesting way to get to know about people and what they did, about history. It would be a way more interesting way to teach history to students, more entertaining, immersive ...

Of course this is a mystery story and fictional, but still. I want to play more adventures based on history after I have realized this. For me it is also fine when there are some fictional/fantasy/mystery elements added, as long as it's clear what has happened and what not.  Big Grin (I mean it's clear with ghosts, but a game should of course not present someone as bankrobber or murderer who wasn't one).

I've finished now too, and while I do think it's a stronger game than Legacy, I have quite conflicted feelings about it (as I do with all Wadjet Eye games).

Well done! I'm wrapping up in a final post later today. I'd love to hear your thoughts on this game (and Wadjet Eye in general).
