Seems like both box designers were told to show as many characters from the game as they could possibly fit on! Of the two Monkey island is marginally nicer.
However, although I find MI ostensibly a finer looking box, I have to say that Grim Fandango has grown on me. The dark blue and gold colour scheme, the clarity of the expressionless faces, the simple Moorish design of the background.. It's actually one of my favourite boxes. No doubt it could be improved (especially the rather large title font) but it does its job so well actually.
So my vote is for Grim Fandango
