Best Version of Myst? - DrewClue - 10-20-2025

I know a lot of people have strong opinions about this, but the last time I heard this discussion was several remasters/remakes ago. So! What does everyone think the best version of Myst is? And PC or would any argue that it works better on a console?

I've played the Mac versions of Myst Masterpiece, RealMyst, and RealMyst Masterpiece. I liked the original RealMyst the best, but I heard that version was buggy in Windows. I enjoyed the freer movement in the most recent version, but some of the background scenes lost their clarity in 3D.

The only good Myst is a uninstalled one.

Seriously though. My guess is the most recent version will look the best, but that is subjective. Haven't played all versions as i'm not the biggest fan. The VR one might be fun though.

I've played the original PC version of Myst and RealMyst Masterpiece Edition. Of the two, I found RealMyst to be far superior.

I'd venture a guess that the most recent 2021 remake is the one to go for these days, though. Especially since they restored the original FMV footage back into it.

Depends, what you prefer. If you want to meet genius loci of original game, for sure I can recommend Myst: Masterpiece Edition from 2000. It is almost same like original and working on modern computers. Using old system of control and moving between pictures, all puzzles working like it was planned. I never liked realMyst. Then I have tried latest remake from 2020/2021. It is technologically upgraded, graphics looks great. It is very similar copy to original with almost same puzzles with one big difference - you are moving freely through the islands. Despite it is beautiful, I dont like it so much. I still prefer original version of moving - whole setting of islands and puzzles were developed for this style and in this new remake you can see limits of it. I think this transition was made mainly to be able to use VR.

So in general - if you want to play original, everything how it was designed and has no problems with old 1993 3D graphics, I can recommend Myst: Masterpiece Edition. If you need better graphics, I can recommend Myst remake from 2021, it is also worth to play.

It's so interesting to see the differences between the versions. Thanks for posting that, Lucien!

Some time ago I watched a bunch of blind lets plays (I was sick) for the latest version of Myst. I noticed everyone missed the page at the start of the game. In all the other versions of the game it is fairly easy to spot, but the latest version they moved it on top of a rock so it would be easier for VR players to pick it up. Because it's so high up most people walk right past it.

Ok so big deal... well, if you don't see the page then you don't really have a good place to start. Most of the people I saw just wander around for 30ish minutes doing nothing until they stumbled across the page. It is supposed to be the first direction/clue for what to do in the game and helps get you going. While VR is fancy, I think most people are still playing it on a regular monitor.

If you're like me and have played Myst a bunch it won't make a difference. But if you're new to the game this could make you throw up your hands in frustration and give up. Imagine playing 1/2 an hour just to find a dumb paper on a rock that you missed. You'd think the game is very obtuse and not worth your time.

On the bright side I like that you can carry all the red and blue pages at the same time. No more backtracking just to see Sirrus demand more pages.

The Myst remake had a patch released that added the original FMV videos as an option by the way. I know some people criticized it for having 3D versions and they wanted the original cheese back. (Oh, LeftHandedGuitarist already mentioned that). 2021 Remake in VR is excellent.

genuinely I missed this in the Myst Masterpiece edition, which is why I never got very far in the game, because I was just wandering around on an island, confused as hell
