Adventure Game Food - PopPunkParty - 04-01-2026

Today I was at the vegan grocery store in town and my curiosity got the best of me. The adventure game fan inside me compelled me to pick this up even though I'm a bit scared of what it's going to taste like. I'm having friends over on the weekend and am going to cook it for them because my partner refused to eat it with me. I will report back the outcome.

Does anyone else have any other (unintentional) examples of food inspired by adventure games?

There are so many icky words on that box, most notably “fermented” and “fungi.” You’ll definitely have to report back when you try it.

Every time I go to an Asian supermarket, I make it a point to try something weird that I’ve never had before. I do steer clear of fungi and fermentation, but other than that I’m pretty open. I think my track record is about 50/50 as to edible or not. Nothing to do with AGs, though.

The one thing from an AG that I encounter regularly is not a food item, it’s GI Asswipe from Stupid Invaders.

I would normally think this an April Fools prank, but it would take a lot of effort to do the box design just for a prank. Fermented?? One of my favorite condiments is Soy Sauce ... fermented soy beans ... Kikkoman brand in made in neighboring state Wisconsin.

Oh yeah, I forgot what day it is. I’m an easy mark.

Best chicken we've ever eaten was Koji Fried Chicken, which we made at home since we can't seem to find it in town. It does involve actually coating the chicken with koji mold for up to 3 days. We were either very brave and/or very foolish to try it, but I swear, by FAR, best fried chicken EVER.

I might be willing to try it if the smell wasn’t offputting. That just brought to mind something my mother did when I was a child. She is a very poor cook who thinks she’s good at it, in other words completely delusional. One time she tried to make hasenpfeffer and put a rabbit in a stewpot to marinate for three or four days … inside a kitchen cabinet. It smelled powerful bad, especially toward the end. And then everything else in that cabinet smelled like that. Forever. I can’t remember if she ate it, I only know that I did not! I have never had hasenpfeffer cooked properly, but somehow the thought doesn’t entice me.

Good lord, was that her own approach, or did she read that recipe somewhere?

Koji Fried Chicken just smells like fried chicken. But when you bite into it, there's a subtle flavor that's utterly addictive.

My guess is it was from a recipe, but my mother the OG Martha Stewart can’t follow a recipe. She always has her own ideas about how to make it better, and “better” usually means adding in some bay leaves. Years later, my siblings and I were reminiscing about some of the culinary horrors visited upon us, and I mentioned how I always got the @$+&! bay leaf on my plate, and they both said no, they always got the £&$!$@ bay leaf on their plate, so we concluded that mom put in enough bay leaves for everybody. Bay leaves are gross and ruin everything.
