Kyrandia 3: Malcolm’s Revenge – Remastered Songs - Legerdemancy - 10-03-2025

If there’s one thing to be said about The Legend of Kyrandia 3, it’s that the musical composition by Frank Klepacki is superb. With this forum full of point & click adventure fans, chances are most of you have played it, and at the very least thought the music was okay.

Both the GOG re-release and the original 1994 version feature heavily compressed mono audio at 22.05 kHz.

Wouldn’t it be fantastic if it had proper stereo sound at 44.1 kHz?

The good news is that the official website of Frank Klepacki has four songs from the game in high fidelity. Even better news, you can listen to them online for free!

Here is a link for convenience:

Subtle sounds that were previously bitcrushed to oblivion can now be heard at long last, including the tambourine at the beginning of Coral Hipness.

Another fascinating thing I’ve observed with this online rendition is how the Jungle Ruins song doesn’t loop around like it normally does in the game, instead just over halfway through it plays almost an extra 3 minutes of audio never heard before.

Obligatory audiophile recommendation: Use headphones for the best experience.

I love Frank Klepacki. His music from Lands of Lore and especially Kyrandia 2 gives me the chills! I never got around to playing Kyrandia 3, but will surely give this a listen!

Listening now, interesting to hear what is surely a mix of his early 90s General MIDI sound with the late 90s more sampled sounds, voices etc. Too bad that the quality in the original game is 22 kHz – but doesn't this also run in ScummVM? Maybe if Frank publishes all his other music files one day, they can simply be exchanged in the ScummVM version..?

Hello EirikMyhr,

Nice to meet a fellow fan of Frank Klepacki’s work.

I can confirm that the Kyrandia series does run in ScummVM, so implementing file swapping for the music files is definitely achievable.

In fact, two dedicated Humongous Entertainment fans did this awhile ago when SomeRandomHEFan and WindowsTV implemented this feature into ScummVM so that remastered soundtracks from Bandcamp could be used.

For example this one:

I look forward to the day when Frank Klepacki might release the remainder of the soundtrack. For now, something is better than nothing.

Thank you for providing your expert composer insights, I had no idea it was late 90’s samples that were used.

Sincerely,

I love Frank Klepacki's work. I can listen to the Command & Conquer soundtrack like a regular album, it's possibly my favourite game music ever.

Ah, I wouldn’t exactly call it an expert insight, especially since I was just reminded that Kyrandia3 was released as early as 1994 - my bad! Big Grin  I was merely noticing that it sounded like a mix of the General MIDI sounds we already heard in the first Kyrandia games (if you were lucky enough to have a PC with a Roland-esque sound card or module), mixed with a more sample-based approach that he would utilise much more in say, Red Alert (1996). So my hunch would be that Kyrandia3 was sort of a «bridge» project where Klepacki tried out some new techniques with sampling and audio clips, and/or maybe a few session musicians, while still being based in his old General MIDI sound palette.  Shy

BTW, thank you for those links! Wonderful to hear those tracks again Smile

Love the Frank Klepacki appreciation, especially for his AG work!

The Kyrandia soundtracks are my favourites in the genre.
