It wasn't my kind of game.

The plot was weak, barely existent between a strong beginning and a very touching ending. There's hardly any plot anyway; you just run through the forest and solve puzzles. Storylines are not brought to a conclusion, so you don't find out what the vultures are all about, and I would have liked to roam through the healed forest again. Apart from Little Mushroom and, to a lesser extent, the guardians, there are no characters with whom you interact much.

This feeling is reinforced by the lack of voice acting; Tove doesn't utter more than a few sounds.

The puzzles range from very easy to quite difficult. I've never needed a walkthrough to find a way to continue playing. It's also illogical that the father and Tove work towards each other without knowing about each other.

The graphics were too simple for me; the next level down is pixels.

It was a couple of years since I played Röki now, so it's not fresh in my memory, but as far as I remember, I enjoyed it quite a bit. Not so much for the deep story, perhaps, but the puzzling was challenging enough to keep me interested and I enjoyed the cozy and wintery atmosphere. The norse mythology bits was a bit silly (as is often the case), but it had a certain charm to it. Not a masterpiece, but definately an enjoyable little game.

Played it back in 2020

Finished Roki

Loved it. Everything about it is charming and beautiful to look at. There are plenty of collectibles to keep you exploring.

The puzzles are great it has a good inventory system that was easy to play on a controller. There is a good mix of puzzle types to back up the inventory ones and figuring them out was fun. I especially loved the way the game style and puzzles changed in the last part of the game to fit the narrative.

My only criticism is that you  lose the fast travel in the last part so you can end up running around back tracking a lot. The locations can also occassionally be non obvious with routes, I missed a staircase for ages that stopped progress for a good half an hour.

my vote for adventure game of the year to date from me.

An adventure game is nothing more than a good story set with engaging puzzles that fit seamlessly in with the story and the characters, and looks and sounds beautiful.

Owned this game for years but always put off playing it as for some reason had it mind it wasn't my thing.

Actually played it this year and loved it!

I find the style of the game great, and really fell into it with it's the Nordic style fairy tale. Not massively challenging game, but not a complete walking simulator either. Some interesting problem solving switching between characters in different time (?) periods.

The makers, Polygon Treehouse, released another game last year. Mythwrecked: Ambrosia Island. Bit of a similar feel graphical and this time it's about greek mythology, only played the demo and at the moment it hasn't quite struck me in the same way as Röki. But maybe I'll try that in a year or two and be proved wrong again.

Digging up old threads ...

I played this one together with a few other adventure enthusiast in the (german) adventure-treff forum.
I enjoyed that play-together pretty much. I love the setting and the player character, and the style was cute. I might actually play this again one day, and i don't do that with lots of games.

It is a nice adventure for the winter season. Smile
