Monkey Island 2 was a finalist and the winner from the start
Grim Fandango
“Snowflakes are one of nature's most fragile things, but just look what they can do when they stick together.” -Vesta M. Kelly
MI2 displays great technical artistic proficiency, it has drama and I love the use of colour. It advertises itself as a graphic adventure made by RON GILBERT. This might be blasphemy, but to me, that merit is debatable.
Grim looks more like a copy/paste job, but it has decent composition and a singular aesthetic vision. It has a good tagline as well: an EPIC tale of CRIME and CORRUPTION? In the LAND OF THE DEAD? I'm in! The T in Tale looks like a J, though. It also mentions the big name developer as a selling point. It doesn't sway me either way in this case, though the mention of Day of the Tentacle does trigger my appreciation for that gmae. I'm aware of this and realize I don't care to project that onto a whole different title. Not a fan of the review quote either, it's kinda tacky to me.
Tough choice. I feel I have to go with Monkey Island 2.

Grim Fandango! :-)
Gorgeous Steve Purcell art vs some models slapped haphazardly onto a black background?
