You definitely should play Thimbleweed Park then, it's made by Ron Gilbert in the classic SCUMM style. And a love letter to those games. And then play Delores: A Thimbleweed Park Mini-Adventure.

Also, Return To Monkey Island was great in my eyes, even if the fans were split on the art style. The story actually continues directly from the ending of Monkey Island 2.

Agreed. I do have Thimbleweed Park. Honestly for some reason I haven't played. I enjoyed Return while it also made me sad. I was sad to see all the criticism towards it. I believer Ron made an excellent game the best he could, but in that, he'll never make a game to fulfill peoples nostalgia. No one can do that. You can't capture that magic in a bottle twice. Same with Tex Murphy Telsa Effect. You'll never please the someone who fell in love with your art 30 years later.

That is so very true. Nostalgia is a strong drug. Few are able to look past it when something related, like a new game in an old series, appears, and then judge that game based on its own merits.

For me, it was the other way around.
I never played Monkey Island games as a kid,  to be fair, Tales was my first one. So I played them way after they were remastered.

I've never felt any nostalgia for this series, so I took Return at face value, with no strings attached.
And what I saw wasn't very flattering. I won't talk about the art style. While it wasn't to my taste, I don't play point-and-click games for the visuals, so it didn't bother me.
The first act was basically just nostalgia bait for old fans. 'Do you remember this?' Do you remember that?" It was like a Monkey Island museum that had somehow been turned into a game.
The puzzles were mediocre, and I found the whole premise of the game baffling.

"- Hey grandpa, do you want to play the new Monkey Island game?
- I'm not Grandpa, Ron.
- Whatever, kid. In this one, you'll finally learn about THE SECRET.
- I don't really care; the MI games  for me weren't about the sec-
- Come on, dude! It'll be great. Just play it!
- OK. Sure. Whatever. I'll give it a try.
After beating a game
- Sike! There was no secret. Haha, you got punked!
- Sure thing, Ron. You fooled me twice, so shame on me, I guess."

And the after credits letter from Ron was like a kiss from the chef.

Hi!

They have recommended you many good games. I just wanted to say that if you allow yourself to play a game from 2012, just play Primordia. Maybe not the best puzzles in the world (at least the first part of the game, it gets better after that), but I can assure story and setting are unforgettable, and includes my favorite sidekick ever: Crispin Horatiobuilt.

P.S Already mentioned, but I must say it: Technobabylon.

Someone already mentioned Paradigm, but I simply must reinforce that one. It's one of the funniest games I've ever played. Surreal and with a devilish sense of humor.
