Is this based on a science fiction book?

Well, the story in this particular game is set in the universe described in the book that won a couple of Hugo Awards.

It's Frederik Pohl's Gateway 2: Homeworld.  Those staring faces were haunting me, but as soon as you mentioned the Hugos, I knew it was one of the two games in the series.

Yup. Read the books, only played a bit of the games but recognized the scene.
