Oh man. An extremely average cover vs an extremely experimental (and extremely 90’s!) cover. Was the GK box really shaped like that? I just don’t really care for how the two elements fit together. Anyway, I got to give it to GK, for the sake of daring, and since the Camelot cover is simply so average.
The GK images themselves are very strong, it’s just that the two images don’t really fit together and are cluttered by too many text elements in a very 90’s way. If they just focused on one of the images without all that text, it could be an instant classic (as the game itself surely is). At the time of release, I’m sure this was regarded as a very cool cover, but maybe it hasn’t aged that well, design-wise. In my humble opinion.

I vote Gabriel Knight angled box.
Pretty much one of my fav boxes of all time.
To answer your question: It was released on both the angled box (cd-rom) and standard box (floppies) on day 1. Only the cd-rom version included the full-voice acting which was stellar.
I'm voting for Gabriel Knight.
Both cover designs have compelling colours and a fantastic look all-round.
GK has a more distinctive appearance which ultimately convinced me to choose it.

My first thought was initially GK, but I considered my bias for the game itself. That box really is obnoxious. Eye-catching, but impractical. The subtitle is barely readable. Plus, Gabriel's face is...off. I don't know what it is. It doesn't look like the hair matches the head.
Camelot is solid. The detail on the knight in the foreground is really sharp. Title has a good font, easy to read. I'll go with that.
For what it's worth, the regular box for GK1 has similar issues, while missing the cult-image at the bottom.

It's Camelot for me.
If the standard shaped/European box art for Gabriel Knight was shown, I would choose that in a heartbeat. The imagery there is great. But I despise the experimental shape version of it with all my heart. It's an abomination! Both from a practical point of view and for the graphic design choices. Get it away from me!
