I didn't play adventure games for a good three to four years. Good excuse to see what I've been missing, but it's going to take a while.

Are we talking commercial titles only? Do narrative-driven escape room games count? I'm specifically thinking of the Eleven Puzzles games, I really enjoyed playing those with one of my brothers.

A: If you think it's an adventure game, then it is an adventure game.

Since adventure genre is not easily defined, there are no strict rules about what you can or cannot put on your list.
So, if you truly believe that they are adventure games, then no one will stop you.

Well, you're the first person to include Rosewater in their top 10 list! Wink

You and I discussed and criticized(!) Blue Prince at the old AG forums, but when all is said and done it ends up in your Top Ten and it's definitely my GOtY. Smile I even played Dare mode and Curse mode several times, couldn't get enough.

Indeed! I saw it on the top of your list! And it is deserving. Its a very clever blend of exploration and will no doubt stay memorable. Im still dizzy about the narrative. Maybe multiple mode playthroughs helps any?

No, multiple mode playthroughs only make it much harder to reach Room 46. I guess some details of the story will always remain a mystery.
BTW, I sent you a PM.

There have been few surprises so far.

There is a lot more love for The Legend of Skye. I thought it was a rather low profile game.
There are also not so many listings of Return to Monkey Island, despite it winning every single adventure award.
It also looks like Kathy Rain 2 has won the hearts of many, despite her rather off-putting personality Wink

Great idea!

I haven't played enough to collate 10 that I really enjoyed (there are quite a few I didn't rate much) but I can probably manage 5:

1. Carol Reed: Dead Drop - just can't fault them for immersion and plain old lovely Scandinavian weirdness

2. Perfect Tides - wonderful characters and richly poignant story

3. Hob’s Barrow - great setting and spooky atmosphere

4. Foolish Mortals - slick and very amusing

5. Stasis: Bone Totem - technically amazing but needed some editing

Hon mention: Chants of Sennaar - I absolutely loved it and gave it 5 stars on the old site, but it's not really what I consider an adventure game.

Dishonourable mention: Life is Strange: True Colours - I loved Life is Strange 1, but this was a stupid story with achingly dull gameplay and characters

I struggled not to put Return to Monkey Island in my dishonorable mentions... As someone already mentioned, the art was atrocious, and the whole thing is kind of a slap in the face to the franchise lovers who should "all grow up and move on" in Gilbert's opinion. Plus the game is so dumbed down, you can't try to use everything on everything and get witty remarks from Guybrush, as it should be. It won all the awards because of Disney's huge marketing budget.
